Gen AI Meta Video – Hackathon
Before generative AI tools like ChatGPT existed, we built a prototype that turned written updates into short, story-like videos.
Role: Product Designer
Opportunity: Meta employees and teams spend hours writing and reading long-form internal updates — and still struggle to stay aligned and informed.
Solution: Before generative AI tools like ChatGPT existed, we built a prototype that turned written updates into short, story-like videos. Our tool aimed to help employees create engaging, scannable recaps of their work—fast.
Outcome: The project was approved for development after a successful hackathon pitch and early testing showed strong time-saving potential, though the build was ultimately paused due to budget constraints.
Research & Insights
To validate the opportunity, we combined quantitative data analysis with qualitative surveys and interviews.
Key Insight
Employees spend a disproportionate amount of time creating and consuming long-form written updates on Workplace, leading to inefficiency, poor visibility, and information overload.
User Pain Points
Writers:
Long posts take too much time to write and format
Visual thinkers struggle to express ideas through text
Unsure if their updates are being seen by the right people
Readers:
Skim or skip long posts due to time constraints
Important info is buried or missed
Overloaded with irrelevant or low-priority updates
Quantitative Findings
Only 20% of work-related posts contain media (photo/video), even though media posts are more engaging
Executives write the most long posts (65% of their content), yet also use media in 31% of their updates
Groups like Learning and Work Announcements show high media usage, signaling demand for richer formats
On average, a user posts 8 times in 80 days, but just 1 post includes media
Time-Saving Opportunity
Employees publish 1,425 long posts daily, averaging 861 words each.
Writing that volume would take ~2,850 hours/day.
We saw an opportunity to reduce that effort by enabling faster, more visual ways to communicate.
